It lost 4000 men, but allowed the rest of the Eighth Army to pull out of the trap. The division was so decimated from this fighting that when the remnants reached safety it was declared combat ineffective. In the east the Chinese threw seven divisions against the 1st Marine Division, strung out along the road to the Chosin Reservoir. The Chinese planned to overrun the Marines and drive to the coast. When this goal was achieved the majority of X Corps would be cut off and then could be defeated in detail.

The landing at Wonson was unopposed; yet, as in any such endeavor, something always goes wrong.
